Monastery of Batalha
The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (XIVth century), built to fulfil the vow made by King João I to the Virgin, commemorates the Portuguese victory at the decisive Battle of Aljubarrota against the Castillians. The monastery, now elected by UNESCO as World Heritage, is a grand monument to the closing phase of Portuguese Gothic and the first in which Manueline Art appeared.
Castle of Porto de Mós
The Castle of Porto de Mós can be seen in any part of the town, due its big pointed green towers Conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148, it would lately regain its palatial characteristics due to the intervention of D. Sancho I, D. Dinis and D. Afonso's – Count of Ourém. Of the five original towers, only three remain presently, due to the constant Moorish attacks and later due to the earthquakes.
Castle of Leiria
Surveilling the city of Leiria, its castle was the stage of many Portuguese History marking events.The beginning of its construction dates from the 12th century and, during its edification, the castle passed through many reigns, suffering different interventions. After the several battles it went through, from the ones against the Moors to the French Invasions, the monument was partially destroyed. Visit this castle and get into the historical past of Portugal. Its Donjon, has recently been adapted into a museological nucleus and assumes an important part of the monument.
S. Pedro de Moel
Characteristic by its aristocratic and cosmopolitan air, it is an elegant summer stay. Land of poets it was ever since linked to the Pine Forest itself which evolves and protects it, Paredes da Vitória, Água de Madeiros e Polvoeira, quiet beaches within the area of the National Forest.
Sanctuary of Fátima
Built in 1928 with local limestone, in neo-baroque style, the Sanctuary includes the monumental Basilica and two lateral wings. It is known as the " Altar for the world ".
Nowadays, the Sanctuary of Fátima receives many millions of believers on pilgrimage and praying, from all over the world. The most important date of the year is the 13th May, the Annual Pilgrimage, and all the 13th of each month from May to October.
